BJP Blasts Thackeray Cousins’ Rally as ‘Desperate Bid’ Ahead of Elections

A joint rally by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray in Mumbai’s Worli Dome has come under fierce criticism from the BJP, which dismissed it as a “desperate bid” to regain political momentum ahead of crucial civic elections.

Thackeray Reunion as Symbol of Marathi Solidarity

At the event themed “Awaj Marathicha” (Voice of Marathi), the cousins embraced on stage, garlanded a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji, and jointly celebrated the rollback of the state’s controversial three-language policy. Their declarative statement, “We have come together to stay together,” was projected as a reaffirmation of Marathi pride and unity.

BJP: Rally More Gimmick Than Movement

BJP leaders, including state minister Ashish Shelar, rejected the event as political theater—a strategy meant to capitalize on recent state policy reversals. Describing it as a “family reunion,” critics noted the timing appeared tactical, aimed at energizing regional sentiment ahead of municipal polls. Some voices within the BJP, however, offered a softer take, even hinting at potential future rapprochement between the Thackeray factions.

Political Stakes in Maharashtra

Experts suggest the unprecedented alliance between Uddhav and Raj could alter electoral equations in upcoming civic contests, uniting Marathi sentiment under a single banner—potentially challenging both BJP dominance and Congress’s foothold. While the BJP reiterates its role in promoting Marathi culture, analysts view this Thackeray coalition as a potent electoral force.

Congress and Opposition React

Congress welcomed the Hindi policy rollback but argued credit belonged to public pressure rather than political grandstanding. The party cautioned against elevating the Thackeray rummage for political gain, emphasizing democratic discourse over dramatics.
