Bengaluru Records Highest February Temperature in Two Decades

On February 17, 2025, Bengaluru experienced an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 35.9°C. This matches the city’s highest February temperature, previously recorded on the same date in 2005. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates that the tech hub will continue to experience rising temperatures as summer approaches.

Bengaluru Surpasses Delhi in Temperature

In a surprising development, Bengaluru’s temperature on February 17 exceeded that of Delhi, marking a significant shift in typical weather patterns. While Bengaluru reached 35.9°C, Delhi’s maximum temperature was comparatively lower at 27°C. This challenges the common perception that North India experiences more extreme weather conditions.

Early Onset of Summer Predicted

The IMD forecasts clear skies for Bengaluru, with early morning fog or mist in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 34°C and 18°C, respectively. Traditionally, summer begins in early March; however, this year, an early onset is anticipated by mid-February. On February 18, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8°C, which was 1.4°C above normal, while the minimum dipped to 17.8°C, slightly below the usual by 0.1°C.

The rising temperatures are projected to impact Bengaluru’s groundwater levels, which are already depleting ahead of the summer season. In response, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has prohibited the use of potable water for non-drinking purposes across the city. Violators will face a fine of ₹5,000. Residents are urged to use drinking water judiciously to prevent shortages in the coming months.

This unprecedented heatwave underscores the pressing need to address climate change and its effects on urban environments. As Bengaluru confronts these rising temperatures, both authorities and citizens must collaborate to implement sustainable practices and mitigate the adverse impacts of global warming.
