Bengaluru Bike-Taxi Riders Detained Amid Protest at Vidhana Soudha

In a sharp escalation of tensions between gig economy workers and the Karnataka government, hundreds of bike-taxi riders staged a protest outside Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, demanding the immediate rollback of the state’s ban on bike-taxi services. The protest, which began peacefully, soon led to a large police presence and multiple detentions.

Protestors Demand Livelihood Restoration

The protesting riders, many affiliated with popular app-based ride platforms, carried placards and chanted slogans urging authorities to “lift the ban now”, asserting that their right to livelihood had been unfairly revoked. With no prior warning or alternate employment pathways, the ban has left thousands of riders abruptly jobless. For many, the bike-taxi model was a primary income source.

According to riders at the scene, the government’s decision has hit lower-income families the hardest. Protestors expressed concerns over vehicle loan repayments, EMIs, fuel expenses, and the absence of alternative jobs in a slowing gig economy. Several riders claimed the ban amounted to “economic punishment without due process.”

Police Detain Dozens as Protest Escalates

Police authorities intervened shortly after the crowd grew outside the state assembly premises. Around 50 riders were detained, and many were forcefully removed from the area to prevent disruption of public order. No major injuries were reported, though tension remained high throughout the morning. Police said the detentions were preventive and aimed at avoiding traffic chaos near the administrative hub.

Uncertainty Over Policy and Regulation

The Karnataka government has defended the ban citing the lack of a legal framework for operating bike-taxis in the state. Officials argue that allowing unregulated two-wheeler taxis on public roads raises concerns about passenger safety, insurance liability, and fare standards. On the other hand, ride-hailing platforms insist that bike-taxis reduce urban congestion and offer an affordable last-mile transport option.

Industry stakeholders are urging the government to issue clear regulatory guidelines instead of blanket bans. Riders have proposed solutions like licensing, insurance coverage, and training certifications as a middle ground to resume operations safely and legally.
