BCCI Sounds Out VVS Laxman on Test Coach Role

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has informally sounded out former India batter VVS Laxman regarding the Indian Test team’s coaching role as the board reviews its red-ball setup following a disappointing Test series against South Africa. The move comes amid internal discussions on whether the current coaching structure is best suited for the longer format of the game.

Gambhir’s Test Record Under Scrutiny

Gautam Gambhir, who took charge as India’s head coach in 2024, continues to enjoy the board’s backing in white-ball cricket. However, sources indicate that there are differing views within the selection and coaching ecosystem about India’s Test performances and approach. While no decision has been taken, officials are understood to be evaluating options to strengthen the red-ball programme ahead of key international assignments and the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

Laxman’s Role and Board Thinking

VVS Laxman currently heads the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence and has previously overseen India’s junior and ‘A’ teams. His name has been discussed due to his experience with red-ball cricket and familiarity with player development pathways. The outreach to Laxman is described as informal, with no formal offer or negotiations at this stage.

The BCCI has not made any public statement on potential changes, stressing that reviews of performance are a routine process. Any decision on the Test coaching role is expected to be taken after assessing upcoming results and long-term planning needs.
