BCCI Confirms Rishabh Pant’s Foot Injury
Rishabh Pant was forced to leave the field after suffering a foot injury during the first day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, on July 23, 2025. The incident raised immediate concern for Team India and prompted a swift response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
BCCI Issues Medical Update
The BCCI confirmed that Pant was hit on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. He was batting on 37 when the blow occurred and had to be taken off the field in a medical cart. In its official update, the board stated that Pant had been taken for scans and the medical team was closely monitoring his condition. Further details would be shared after a full assessment.
Concerns Over Metatarsal Injury
Medical experts and former players have suggested the injury could involve a metatarsal fracture, given Pant’s inability to walk and visible swelling. This adds to Pant’s injury troubles, as he had also sustained a finger injury earlier in the series at Lord’s.
Strong Start for India Despite Setback
Despite the loss of Pant, India ended the day in a commanding position. Openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 46 and 58 respectively, laying a solid platform. Sai Sudharsan contributed 61 runs and built a 71-run partnership with Pant. India closed the day at 264 for 4, with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur unbeaten.
Personal Milestone for Pant
Before retiring hurt, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score over 1,000 Test runs outside India—a significant personal achievement in an otherwise unfortunate outing. If he is ruled out for the rest of the match or series, backup wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel is expected to take over.
