BCCI Asked Dhoni To Step Down In 2017: Ex Selector

A former national selector has revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India asked MS Dhoni to relinquish the limited overs captaincy in 2017 as part of a leadership transition plan.

MS Dhoni Captaincy Change 2017

According to the former selector, the board had already begun planning for future leadership and wanted a gradual shift to a younger captain. Dhoni subsequently stepped down from the ODI and T20I captaincy ahead of the England series that year.

Virat Kohli then took over as captain in both white ball formats while Dhoni continued playing as a senior player and wicketkeeper batter.

Leadership Transition In Indian Cricket

The decision was aimed at ensuring continuity and stability during a generational change in the team. Dhoni remained an important presence in the dressing room, contributing experience in match situations and guiding younger players.

The transition allowed the new leadership to settle while retaining the core team structure built during Dhoni’s tenure.

Dhoni Role After Captaincy

After stepping down, Dhoni continued representing India across formats for several years and remained active in franchise cricket. His role shifted to mentoring and finishing innings rather than leading the side on the field.

The revelation provides insight into the internal planning behind one of Indian cricket’s most significant captaincy changes.
