Bangladesh Suspends Visa Services in India

Bangladesh has temporarily suspended most visa services at its diplomatic missions in India, citing security-related concerns. The decision affects visa processing at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and its deputy high commissions in Kolkata and Agartala. Officials said the move is precautionary and will remain in force until the situation is reviewed.

Security Concerns Behind Decision

Bangladesh’s foreign affairs authorities said the suspension was prompted by concerns over the safety of mission staff and applicants. While general visa services have been halted at select locations, certain categories such as medical, business and official visas continue to be processed where operational arrangements are in place. Visa services at missions in Mumbai and Chennai are continuing.

Diplomatic Context With India

The suspension comes at a time of strain in India–Bangladesh relations, marked by reciprocal visa restrictions and diplomatic caution. Indian authorities had earlier scaled back visa services for Bangladeshi nationals following security incidents involving diplomatic establishments. These developments have led both sides to adopt restrictive measures while reassessing ground conditions.

US Visa Bond Issue Raised

Alongside the India-related decision, Bangladesh has indicated it will engage with the United States seeking an exemption from a recently introduced visa bond requirement for Bangladeshi travellers. Dhaka has described the requirement as burdensome and said it plans to raise the issue through diplomatic channels, noting that similar concerns have been expressed by other affected countries.

Temporary Measure, Review Expected

Bangladeshi officials stressed that the suspension of visa services in India is not permanent. Services are expected to resume once security concerns are addressed and operational safety can be ensured. The situation reflects broader regional and global visa policy tightening driven by security and immigration considerations.
