Bangladesh Slams Rajnath Singh’s Remarks on Yunus
The government of Bangladesh voiced strong objections after India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh advised Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to “watch his words,” describing the comments as “incorrect and unhelpful” to diplomatic relations.
Minister’s Warning
During an interview to Network18, Rajnath Singh stated that India “does not seek tense relations with Bangladesh,” but added that Yunus “should be cautious with his statements.” The remarks were made against a backdrop of strained India-Bangladesh ties and amplified concerns in Dhaka over managing diplomatic language and neighbourly sensitivities.
Dhaka’s Response
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry said that Singh’s remarks lacked “propriety and diplomatic nicety” and emphasised that the country remains committed to a cooperative relationship with India based on mutual respect and equality. Officials pointed out that public comments from one side can create avoidable friction and urged a return to constructive dialogue.
Broader Implications
The exchange highlights how verbal interactions at senior levels can have outsized impact on bilateral relations. While both nations share deep historical and cultural ties, diplomats caution that seemingly small public admonishments risk overshadowing broader cooperation in trade, border security and regional connectivity. Experts say restoring trust will require restraint, mutual consultation and careful handling of each country’s domestic sensitivities.
