Bangladesh Seeks US Nod For Russian Oil

Bangladesh has formally asked the United States for a temporary waiver to buy Russian oil, as rising crude prices and supply stress linked to the West Asia crisis increase pressure on its economy. The request comes as Dhaka struggles to secure stable fuel flows for transport, power generation and industry.

Bangladesh Seeks US Waiver For Russian Oil

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury made the request during a meeting in Dhaka with US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen. Bangladesh is seeking an arrangement similar to the temporary relief recently given to India, arguing that the present energy shock is hurting import-dependent economies across South Asia. The move reflects Dhaka’s effort to widen sourcing options as global fuel markets remain volatile.

Fuel Shortage Pressures Bangladesh Economy

Bangladesh relies heavily on imported energy and has been facing shortages that have affected transport and industrial operations. The government has already introduced fuel rationing measures in some areas, while also trying to reduce consumption in other sectors. Rising oil prices have added to inflation concerns and increased pressure on power supply planning, especially as the country remains exposed to disruptions in traditional Middle East supply routes.

India Diesel Supply Offers Emergency Support

Alongside its request to Washington, Bangladesh is also pursuing emergency supplies from neighbouring India and other alternative sources. India has already supplied 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel through the cross-border Friendship Pipeline, giving Dhaka a short-term buffer as it looks for more stable fuel access. Officials are also exploring additional volumes from Indian suppliers. The Russian oil waiver request now stands out as Bangladesh’s most direct attempt to secure cheaper and more reliable supplies during a period of severe market stress.
