Bangladesh Seeks Interpol Help To Extradite Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has confirmed that Dhaka has sought assistance from Interpol to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India. The development comes days after a Bangladeshi court sentenced Hasina to death in a case related to the deaths of protesters during the 2018 student quota agitation. Dhaka maintains that it wants Hasina returned to face legal proceedings under domestic law.

India Maintains Careful Silence

India has so far not issued any formal response to the renewed extradition request. New Delhi has repeatedly stated that any decision regarding Hasina’s status will be taken in line with domestic legal procedures and humanitarian considerations. Indian officials have also avoided commenting on the fairness of the recent trial, which international legal experts and rights groups have sharply criticised.

Diplomatic Tensions Rising

Dhaka’s outreach to Interpol signals an escalation in its attempts to bring Hasina back, though experts note that Interpol cannot compel India to act and that political cases are often exempt from Red Notice enforcement. The situation has created fresh strain in India-Bangladesh ties at a time when both countries have historically cooperated closely on security and trade. Analysts say New Delhi will likely continue to tread cautiously given regional stability concerns and ongoing questions about due process in Hasina’s sentencing.
