Bangladesh Can’t Remain In Current State, Says Hasina

Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has said her country “can’t and won’t remain in this state” and that it “will rise again.” Speaking in an email interview from Delhi, where she is staying, she stressed that her return hinges on the restoration of “participatory democracy” and the conduct of free and fair elections.

Condition For Return & Political Outlook

Hasina made clear that she would only go back to Bangladesh once her party, the Awami League, is allowed to participate in elections and the interim government meets legitimacy standards. She also expressed concerns about minorities and institutions being targeted under the current setup, and criticised the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, accusing it of empowering extremists.

Security And Diplomatic Dimensions

While residing in Delhi, Hasina said she enjoys a sense of freedom to go about her day, but acknowledged her exile reflects the gravity of Bangladesh’s political crisis. Her remarks underscore rising diplomatic sensitivities between India and Bangladesh, especially given her long tenure and strong ties with India. The condition she sets for her return highlights the challenges ahead for Bangladesh’s transitional phase and the broader push for democratic stability after a turbulent period.
