Bangladesh Bus Plunges Into Padma River

A passenger bus carrying around 40 people plunged into the Padma River in Bangladesh while trying to board a ferry at the Daulatdia terminal in Rajbari district, triggering a major rescue operation. Early reports focused on the fall itself and fears of heavy casualties, while later updates said the death toll had risen as rescuers pulled bodies from the submerged vehicle.

The accident happened at about 5:15 pm on March 25 when the Dhaka-bound bus was moving from a pontoon toward a ferry. Officials and witnesses said the driver appeared to lose control after a smaller utility ferry struck the pontoon, causing the bus to plunge into the river and sink. Reports said the vehicle went down to a significant depth, complicating rescue efforts.

Rescue Operation Continues After Bus Falls Into River

Fire service divers, police, coast guard personnel and other local authorities joined the rescue operation. Some passengers managed to swim to safety, but many were believed to be trapped inside the bus. As the rescue effort continued into the next day, casualty figures kept changing as more victims were recovered from the river.
