Bangladesh Army Chief Warns of Internal Anarchy Threatening National Sovereignty

In a recent address, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman expressed deep concern over the nation’s escalating internal conflicts, emphasizing that the ongoing political turmoil has led to a severe sociopolitical crisis. He highlighted that citizens are increasingly “preoccupied with vilifying each other,” leading to a deteriorating law and order situation.

Political Turmoil and Sociopolitical Crisis

General Zaman attributed the current unrest to political instability, noting that the pervasive infighting among various societal factions poses a significant threat to Bangladesh’s sovereignty. He stated, “There is an urgent need for national unity and institutional discipline,” underscoring the necessity for collective action to address the crisis.

Collapse of Law and Order

The Army Chief also criticized the inefficacy of the police force, pointing out that officers, from senior to junior ranks, are operating under a cloud of fear due to numerous judicial cases and incarcerations among their peers. This atmosphere of apprehension has, according to General Zaman, contributed to the collapse of law and order, thereby increasing the responsibility of the armed forces to maintain stability.

Call for National Unity

In his appeal to the citizens, General Zaman warned that continued internal conflicts could jeopardize the nation’s independence and integrity. He urged, “If you can’t move beyond your differences and continue meddling and fighting among yourselves, and if you continue to injure and kill one another, the independence and integrity of the country will be at risk—I warn you.”

Operation Devil Hunt

In response to the surge in violence, vandalism, and rioting, security forces initiated ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ earlier this month. This offensive led to the arrest of 8,600 individuals within three weeks, with the interim government accusing them of attempting to “destabilize the country.”

The Army Chief’s remarks come in the wake of the student-led revolution that resulted in the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government last August. General Waker-Uz-Zaman assumed his position as the head of the army following Ms. Hasina’s departure to India amid widespread protests.

Bangladesh has faced recurring periods of political instability and internal strife. The current situation underscores the critical need for cohesive national efforts to restore order and preserve the nation’s sovereignty.
