Bangladesh And Pakistan Pledge Major Trade Revival
Bangladesh and Pakistan have agreed to revive their trade and economic cooperation after nearly two decades of limited engagement. The breakthrough came during the ninth session of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) held in Dhaka, the first since 2005. Both nations expressed commitment to take ties to a “new strategic level” through investments, trade expansion and sectoral cooperation.
Newfound Momentum
Delegates identified agriculture, pharmaceuticals, information technology, food processing and energy as key areas of collaboration. Officials said the renewed focus would reverse years of minimal contact and promote mutually beneficial exchanges.
Agreements And Focus Areas
Both sides discussed measures to simplify trade logistics, encourage industrial partnerships and strengthen institutional coordination. The talks also highlighted the possibility of regional value-chain integration, positioning the two countries as complementary partners in South Asia.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the positive tone, observers noted that historical issues, particularly the shadow of the 1971 war, continue to weigh on the relationship. Converting commitments into actual trade volume and stable mechanisms will be the real test of this revival effort.
