Back-to-Back Earthquakes Shake Delhi-NCR, Epicentre in Jhajjar
Residents across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and surrounding areas experienced back-to-back earthquakes over two days, with both tremors originating from Jhajjar district in Haryana. Although no damage or injuries have been reported, the quakes caused panic in residential and commercial buildings.
Second Quake in 24 Hours
On the evening of July 11, at 7:49 pm, a mild earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale hit Delhi-NCR. The epicentre was confirmed to be in Jhajjar at a shallow depth of 10 km. Tremors were felt in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. The quake lasted only a few seconds but was strong enough to be noticed by people indoors.
Stronger Tremor on Thursday Morning
The previous morning, on July 10 at 9:04 am, a more powerful quake of 4.4 magnitude had already shaken the region. This too originated from Jhajjar at a similar depth of 10 km. The tremor led to temporary suspension of metro services and evacuation of several buildings. People rushed outdoors as a precaution, but there were no reports of damage or casualties.
Region Lies in High-Risk Seismic Zone
Delhi-NCR falls under Seismic Zone IV, which denotes a high-risk area for earthquakes. Experts note that these tremors could be minor stress-releasing quakes along existing fault lines such as the Mahendragarh–Dehradun and Delhi–Haridwar ridges. They do not necessarily signal a major earthquake but should serve as reminders for emergency preparedness.
Safety Advisory Issued
Authorities have urged residents to stay calm and follow earthquake safety protocols. These include staying away from windows and unstable structures, taking cover under sturdy furniture during tremors, and preparing basic emergency kits at home. Regular earthquake drills are also advised, especially in schools and offices.
