Axiom‑4 Crew, Including Shukla, Undocks From ISS

India’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and three fellow astronauts from the Axiom‑4 mission undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) on July 14, marking the start of their return journey to Earth aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Grace” capsule.

The spacecraft separated from the ISS at 4:35 PM IST. Splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California, is scheduled around 3 PM IST on July 15.

Milestone Mission For India

Shukla is the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS and only the second Indian citizen in space since Rakesh Sharma’s mission in 1984. His participation in this private-public mission places India firmly on the map of global human spaceflight, especially in collaboration with international space agencies.

The Axiom‑4 mission launched on June 25 and docked with the ISS on June 26. Over 18 days in orbit, the crew conducted more than 60 scientific experiments, including seven developed in India. These focused on microgravity, space medicine, AI integration, and bioscience.

Interaction With India From Orbit

Shukla’s time on board was marked by high engagement with the Indian public. He spoke with students and the Prime Minister during a live video session, sharing the message that “today’s India looks ambitious from space” and “full of pride.”

A farewell ceremony was held aboard the ISS before undocking, with tributes paid to the multinational crew.

Next Steps After Return

Once back on Earth, the crew will undergo medical checks and rehabilitation to help them readjust to gravity. Shukla is expected to return to India later this month, where a ceremonial welcome is likely.

The successful completion of Axiom‑4 lays the groundwork for India’s upcoming Gaganyaan mission, scheduled for 2027, and reinforces India’s expanding role in international space exploration.
