Authorities Demolish Residence of Nagpur Violence Accused Fahim Khan
Authorities in Nagpur have demolished the house of Fahim Khan, a key accused in the recent communal violence that shook the city. The demolition took place on March 24, 2025, targeting Khan’s double-storey residence in Sanjay Bagh Colony, Ashi Nagar zone. The property was deemed to be an illegal construction lacking approved building plans.
Background to the Clashes
The incident stems from violence that erupted on March 17 after rumors circulated that a religious cloth, or ‘chadar’, with sacred inscriptions had been desecrated during a protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The protest was against the tomb of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This sparked widespread stone pelting and arson in Nagpur, resulting in injuries to 33 police personnel, including senior-ranking officers.
Fahim Khan’s Role and Legal Action
Fahim Khan, associated with the Minority Democratic Party, was identified by police as one of the main instigators of the unrest. He was subsequently arrested and charged with serious offenses including sedition. Over 100 individuals were detained in connection with the violence. Authorities also found that Khan’s house was built in violation of municipal regulations.
Demolition Ordered Under Civic Laws
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation issued a demolition notice to Khan’s family on March 21, stating that the structure violated building norms. After the family failed to act within the 24-hour notice period, civic officials, accompanied by police, moved in with bulldozers on March 24 and razed the property under provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.
Government’s Warning to Rioters
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated the government’s firm stance against rioting and unlawful acts. He announced that compensation for damage caused during the violence would be recovered from the accused, including through asset seizure and auctions if necessary. The demolition of Khan’s property was presented as a message to others involved in or considering similar acts.

The demolition has sparked a divided response among residents. While some supported the swift and stern action as a necessary deterrent, others voiced concerns about whether such steps could heighten tensions.
