Australia Suspends Parcel Deliveries to U.S. Over Tariffs
Australia Post has suspended most parcel deliveries to the United States and Puerto Rico following the U.S. government’s decision to scrap the “de minimis” duty-free exemption. Until now, packages under US$800 entered duty-free, but from August 29 they will face tariffs based on country-specific rates. Letters, documents, and gifts below US$100 remain unaffected.
Businesses Facing Disruption
The suspension has caused concern among small retailers and e-commerce firms who depend on cross-border shipping. Many businesses report that shipping costs may now exceed production costs. Australia Post said it is working with U.S. authorities and logistics partners to resolve operational hurdles and restore services quickly.
A Global Postal Pause
Australia joins India, Japan, Switzerland, and several European nations in halting parcel deliveries to the U.S. The coordinated move reflects global unease over unclear tariff collection rules and a lack of guidance from U.S. customs. International trade experts warn the disruption could significantly affect global e-commerce flows.
