At Least 47 Dead In Nepal After Heavy Rains
Heavy monsoon rains in Nepal since Friday have triggered landslides and flash floods, killing at least 47 people across the country. Authorities say many roads are blocked, bridges washed away, and rescue efforts are underway.
Majority Casualties In Ilam
The eastern district of Ilam, bordering India, was worst hit. Thirty-five deaths were reported from separate landslides there. In addition, nine people are missing after being swept away in floods, and three more died in lightning strikes.
Infrastructure And Disruptions
Floodwaters and debris have blocked key highways and damaged vital bridges. The Koshi River in the southeast is flowing above danger levels, prompting authorities to open all 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage to release excess water. Vehicular traffic on the barrage bridge has been suspended. In Kathmandu, flooding has cut road access and isolated parts of the capital.
Rescue And Warnings
Rescue teams and security forces are active in search operations for the missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction Authority warns that rainfall may continue until Monday and urges residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert.
