Assembly Poll Dates Announced In Five Regions

The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry, setting the stage for a major round of state-level political contests. Polling will begin in April, with West Bengal voting in two phases, while the other four regions will go to the polls in a single phase. Counting for all five will take place on May 4.

Assembly Election 2026 Schedule Announced

The election schedule covers four states and one Union Territory. Kerala, Assam and Puducherry will vote on April 9. Tamil Nadu will vote on April 23. West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in all poll-bound regions.

West Bengal Voting In Two Phases

West Bengal is the only state among the five where polling will be held in more than one phase. The two-phase schedule is shorter than previous election cycles in the state, where voting had been spread over more rounds. The polling plan is expected to influence campaign strategy, security deployment and local political mobilisation in one of the most closely watched electoral battles of the year.

Counting Day Set For May 4

Votes for all five assemblies will be counted on May 4, giving parties a single result day across the election map. These elections are politically important because they will determine the next governments in major states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry. With the poll dates now fixed, political parties are expected to speed up candidate selection, alliance decisions and campaign outreach.
