Assam Draft Electoral Rolls Drop 10.56 Lakh Names
The Election Commission of India has released the draft electoral rolls for Assam following a Special Summary Revision exercise, leading to the deletion of 10.56 lakh names from the voter list. The revision was carried out as part of preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections and aimed at cleaning and updating the state’s electoral database.
Reasons Behind Large-Scale Deletions
Officials said the deletions were made after a detailed verification process that identified ineligible entries. The primary reasons included deaths of registered voters, permanent migration out of constituencies, and duplicate or multiple registrations. The revision also involved correcting demographic details and updating voter information based on field-level verification.
After the revision, Assam’s draft electoral rolls now include around 2.51 crore voters. The status of individuals classified earlier as “D-voters” remains unchanged in the draft, with their names retained but marked as per existing records.
Claims, Objections, and Next Steps
The Special Revision involved house-to-house verification across the state, covering millions of households over several weeks. The Election Commission has opened a window for voters to submit claims and objections to the draft rolls, allowing eligible voters to seek inclusion or correction of details. After this process is completed, the final electoral rolls will be published as per the announced schedule.
Officials said the exercise was necessary to ensure accuracy, transparency, and integrity of the electoral process ahead of the polls.
