Ashwin Joins Sydney Thunder In Big Bash
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has signed a contract with Sydney Thunder, becoming one of the few Indian male cricketers to join Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).
Timing And Availability
Ashwin’s deal runs for two seasons. He will be available to play from mid-December 2025, after he completes his commitments in the International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE.
Barriers Removed
Earlier, restrictions by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prevented Indian men from playing in foreign franchise leagues while being active in Indian cricket. Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket in December 2024 and exit from the IPL in August 2025 cleared those hurdles.
Role And Expectations
Thunder’s management stated they see Ashwin as a key overseas signing, leveraging his experience and strategic acumen. He praised the team’s leadership and said he is aligned with their vision for high performance.
Significance For Indian Cricket
Ashwin’s entry into the BBL opens doors for future Indian players in foreign franchises. It signals evolving norms in global T20 cricket and reflects increasing mobility for players post-retirement or outside national duties.
