Army Officer Assaults SpiceJet Staff at Srinagar Airport
A senior Indian Army officer has been accused of violently attacking four SpiceJet ground staff at Srinagar airport on July 26, 2025, after being asked to pay for excess cabin baggage. One staff member sustained a spinal fracture, and another suffered severe jaw injuries.
Dispute Over Excess Luggage Triggers Assault
The officer, due to board SpiceJet flight SG‑386 to Delhi, attempted to carry two cabin bags totalling 16 kg, exceeding the airline’s 7 kg limit. When asked to pay the applicable charges, he refused and forcefully entered the aerobridge. After being escorted back to the gate by CISF personnel, he reportedly became aggressive, launching punches, kicks, and even using a metal queue stand to strike staff.
Brutal Attack Captured on Camera
According to SpiceJet, the assault persisted even after one staff member fainted. Video and CCTV footage show staff being struck repeatedly, one dragged while unconscious, and another bleeding profusely from mouth and nose. All injured staff were rushed to hospital for treatment.
FIR Lodged, No-Fly Listing Initiated
SpiceJet has filed an FIR with local police in Budgam. The airline has also requested the Ministry of Civil Aviation to place the officer on its no‑fly list under civil aviation rules. The CCTV footage has been handed over to the authorities for further investigation.
Political and Public Outcry
Jammu & Kashmir political parties have strongly condemned the incident. Leaders from National Conference and PDP demanded immediate disciplinary action, describing the attack as “murderous” and “shameful.” They called on the Army and civil authorities to hold the officer accountable.
Army Cooperation and Case Status
The Indian Army has acknowledged the incident, confirmed it is monitoring the matter, and is supporting civil authorities as the investigation proceeds. No arrests have yet been confirmed.
