Army Chief Warns of Unpredictable Future Challenges

Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Indian Army, said that future threats are becoming increasingly unpredictable and complex. Speaking to students at a college in his hometown of Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, he described the coming era in terms of “instability, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity”. He added that even Donald Trump “doesn’t know what he is going to do tomorrow”, illustrating how rapidly situations can change.

Changing Nature of Threats

General Dwivedi cited a wide range of emerging risks to national security. These include traditional challenges at the border and from terrorism, but also newer arenas like cyber warfare, space warfare involving satellites, chemical, biological and radiological threats, and the spread of disinformation. He emphasised that the military must prepare for all these fronts simultaneously.

Implications for Defence Strategy

The remarks underline a shift in military thinking from predictable threats to a constantly evolving environment. For the defence forces, this means greater flexibility, faster decision-making and enhanced readiness across domains. The address also serves as a message to students and youth that career paths and future roles must adapt to change.
