Annamalai Says He Chose Not To Contest Tamil Nadu Polls

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has said he was not denied a ticket by the party and had himself decided not to contest the upcoming Assembly elections. His clarification came after his absence from the BJP’s first candidate list triggered speculation over seat-sharing tensions within the AIADMK-led alliance.

Annamalai Not In BJP Candidate List

The BJP released its first list of 27 candidates for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, but Annamalai’s name was missing, making it one of the biggest talking points in the state’s election campaign. Soon after, questions emerged over whether the omission was linked to internal differences over constituency allocation.

Annamalai Says Decision Was Personal

Responding to the speculation, Annamalai said he had already informed the party leadership and the core committee in writing that he did not want to contest from any constituency. He said the issue was being unnecessarily misread in public debate and made it clear that the decision to stay out of the race was his own.

Seat Sharing In Tamil Nadu NDA

Reports around the political discussions suggested that Annamalai had concerns over the seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP and AIADMK, especially in the Coimbatore region where his name had been linked to possible constituencies. However, his public statement focused on his decision not to enter the electoral fray and to instead campaign for alliance candidates.

BJP Focuses On Tamil Nadu Campaign

Annamalai said he would actively campaign for NDA nominees across the state. His remarks came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to engage with party workers and campaign in the region, underlining the BJP’s effort to strengthen its role in the Tamil Nadu election despite contesting within an alliance framework.
