Annamalai Criticises Kamal Over Karur Stampede Response

BJP’s Tamil Nadu chief K. Annamalai launched a sharp attack on Kamal Haasan, accusing him of siding with the ruling DMK during the fallout from the Karur rally stampede. The stampede, which occurred on September 27, left 41 people dead and dozens injured.

Annamalai’s Accusation

Annamalai claimed that Kamal has “sold his soul for a Rajya Sabha seat,” pointing to Haasan’s recent nomination to the Upper House. He questioned Kamal’s decision to defend the police and administration, asking whether such support would be accepted by the Tamil Nadu public.

Kamal’s Visit and Remarks

Kamal Haasan had visited Karur to meet families of victims. He denied that his visit was political, stating that he believed the government’s handling prevented a worse disaster. He praised Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for swift action in the aftermath and called for introspection among all parties.

Political Backdrop

The Karur tragedy has become a politically charged issue. Various parties, including BJP, DMK, and MNM, have traded blame over negligence, crowd control failures, and responsibility. Annamalai’s remarks add to the partisan tensions surrounding the incident and its handling by both state and party leaders.
