Andy Burnham Backs Saudi Security After Attacks
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has affirmed the United Kingdom’s support for Saudi Arabia’s security and sovereignty following renewed Houthi attacks threatening commercial shipping and regional stability in the Red Sea.

Burnham conveyed the assurance during a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The two leaders reviewed recent regional and international developments, including the escalating security situation around the Red Sea.
The British prime minister condemned the latest Houthi attacks and emphasised the importance of protecting freedom of navigation through the strategically important waterway. He also reiterated London’s opposition to actions threatening Saudi territory, shipping infrastructure and wider regional security.
Houthi Red Sea Attacks
The conversation followed an escalation involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which recently declared restrictions on Saudi-linked shipping near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
The group claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers, Encelia and Layla. Saudi authorities confirmed that the Encelia was struck by an unidentified projectile near Jizan, causing a fire at the vessel’s bow. Its crew was reported safe, and measures were taken to secure the tanker and prevent environmental damage.
The reported attack on the Layla had not been independently confirmed. Houthi forces have also targeted Saudi oil infrastructure, further raising concerns about maritime traffic and energy supplies.
Red Sea Shipping Concerns
The Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb form a vital trade corridor connecting the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea. Continued attacks could force more vessels to use longer routes around Africa, increasing shipping costs and delivery times.
Burnham and Mohammed bin Salman agreed on the need to address developments that could threaten regional stability. Their discussion highlighted growing international concern over attacks on commercial vessels and Saudi infrastructure.
