Andrew Flintoff Steps Down as England Lions Coach
Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as England Lions head coach after nearly two years in charge, ending his spell with England’s development side ahead of his move to coach Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League.
Andrew Flintoff Leaves England Lions Role
Flintoff took charge of the England Lions in September 2024 and worked closely with some of the country’s leading emerging players during his tenure.
The former England captain and all-rounder said he had enjoyed working with the best young cricketers in the country and took pride in watching players develop through the Lions programme.
He also thanked the coaching and support staff, particularly ECB Men’s Performance Director Ed Barney, as well as England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key for giving him the opportunity to lead the Lions.
Sydney Thunder Coaching Role Awaits Flintoff
Flintoff’s departure comes two months after he was appointed head coach of Sydney Thunder for the Big Bash League.
The 48-year-old has signed a two-year agreement with the Australian franchise, keeping him in charge through the end of BBL 17.
The position will be Flintoff’s first coaching role outside the United Kingdom. He previously played in the Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat and has also coached Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.
Flintoff said he was looking forward to beginning his work with Sydney Thunder later this year.
Mike Yardy Takes Upcoming Coaching Duties
England Under-19 head coach Mike Yardy will take charge of the Professional County Club Select XI for its four-day warm-up match against Pakistan.
The fixture begins at Beckenham on August 12 as Pakistan prepare for their Test series against England.
The ECB has not yet announced a permanent successor to Flintoff as England Lions head coach.
