Amit Shah Targets Rahul Gandhi Over Gamucha Row
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over a controversy linked to the gamucha, a traditional Assamese cloth, questioning why the Assam Congress has remained silent on the issue.
Cultural Insult Allegation
Shah alleged that Rahul Gandhi did not wear the gamucha during a Republic Day-related event, calling it disrespectful to Assam’s culture and the wider Northeast. He said the incident reflected a lack of sensitivity and accused the Congress of ignoring local sentiment.
Congress Pushes Back
The Congress rejected the allegation, stating that Gandhi had worn the traditional cloth initially and removed it later while seated. Party leaders also pointed out that several other dignitaries at the event were not seen wearing the gamucha throughout, accusing the BJP of turning a ceremonial matter into a political controversy.
Political Undertone Ahead of Polls
The exchange has added to political tensions in Assam, with cultural identity becoming a campaign issue ahead of upcoming elections. Both parties have traded charges, with the BJP framing the issue as cultural respect and the Congress calling it deliberate politicisation.
