Amit Shah Flags Religious Conversions in Punjab
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed concern over reports of religious conversions in Punjab and urged the state government to take action. He made the remarks while addressing an event commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, linking the issue to social harmony and religious freedom.

Speaking at a public function, Amit Shah said that instances of religious conversions in Punjab were worrying and required attention from the state administration. He called upon the Punjab government to act firmly if conversions were taking place through inducement or coercion. Shah stated that preserving religious traditions and maintaining communal balance was essential for the state’s stability.
He also noted that the issue should not be politicised and stressed the importance of addressing concerns transparently within the framework of the law.
Call for Action from Punjab Government
The Home Minister appealed to both the government and civil society to work collectively to prevent any form of forced or incentivised conversion. He said that religious freedom must be protected while ensuring that unlawful practices are not allowed to flourish. Shah urged local authorities to examine complaints carefully and enforce existing legal provisions where necessary.
Punjab currently does not have a specific anti-conversion law, though general criminal laws apply in cases involving coercion or fraud.
Reference to Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Legacy
During his address, Shah recalled the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who is remembered for defending freedom of faith. He said that the Guru’s legacy underscored the importance of protecting religious rights and upholding unity. The remarks placed contemporary concerns within a broader historical and cultural context.
