Ambulance Drivers Questioned Over Karur Rally Stampede

Police have questioned ambulance drivers who were on duty during the deadly stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Veluswamypuram, Karur, held on September 27.

According to officials, five to six drivers, from government and private ambulances in Karur and nearby districts, appeared before investigators. They were asked about who called them, how many calls hospitals received, and how many ambulances were deployed that day.

The police said that 41 people died in the incident, and around 60 others were injured. Earlier reports had given varying figures; some sources cited 39 killed and over 50 injured, while others reported up to 124 injured.

Authorities also stated that five ambulances arranged by Vijay’s party (TVK) were stationed near the police quarters. In addition, about ten ambulances from Amaravathi Hospital were reportedly pressed into service immediately after the stampede.

This questioning of ambulance drivers is part of the broader investigation into the Karur tragedy, where authorities are probing event planning, crowd control, delays, and accountability. The Tamil Nadu government has already announced compensation for victims and formed a commission to look into the causes of the stampede.
