Amazon Workers Warn Against “Warp-Speed” AI Rollout

Over 1,000 employees at Amazon have signed an open letter addressed to CEO Andy Jassy, urging the company to slow down its rapid deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). The signatories — engineers, developers, warehouse staff and others — argue that the “all-costs-justified, warp-speed” push into AI threatens jobs, democratic norms, and the environment.

Concerns Over Jobs, Climate and Surveillance

The letter warns that aggressive automation could displace many workers, deepening fears after Amazon’s recent rounds of layoffs. Signatories also express concern that expanding data-center infrastructure for AI will increase carbon emissions, undermining the company’s climate-neutral pledges. Additionally, they caution that unchecked AI deployment may enable intrusive surveillance and reduce worker control over how tools are used.

Call for Responsible AI Policies

The employees demand that Amazon adopt stronger ethical guardrails: no AI systems powered by fossil-fuel energy, no tools enabling mass surveillance or automation-driven layoffs without human oversight, and inclusion of everyday workers in decision-making about AI deployment. They describe the current pace as irresponsible, especially during a critical period for global climate and social stability.

Wider Debate Over Corporate AI Race

This internal protest adds to broader global debate on whether big corporations are moving too swiftly in adopting AI — prioritizing profits and productivity without adequately considering social, environmental, or ethical consequences. The letter from Amazon workers joins similar warnings from tech-industry insiders and climate advocates calling for a more cautious, people-centric approach to AI adoption.
