Amazon Plans To Cut 600,000 Jobs By 2033
Amazon is preparing to reduce its reliance on human workers by automating a large share of its U.S. operations. According to internal planning documents, the company aims to replace around 600,000 jobs by 2033 with robotics and artificial intelligence. A phased target reportedly includes eliminating 160,000 positions by 2027.
Company’s Clarification
Responding to reports, Amazon said these numbers reflect internal projections from one unit and do not represent confirmed workforce cuts. The company stressed it continues to employ thousands worldwide and that automation is creating new categories of technical jobs in robotics maintenance and system oversight.
Robots In Warehouses
Amazon currently operates over 750,000 robots across its fulfilment centres. These robots handle sorting, packaging and inventory movement. The company maintains that automation has boosted efficiency without immediate mass layoffs, but future hiring growth will be significantly slowed.
Industry Impact
The move reflects a wider trend in logistics and warehousing, where companies are using automation to cut costs and increase efficiency. Analysts warn that while not all existing jobs will vanish immediately, low-skill roles could shrink, and new employment will demand higher technical expertise.
