Alstom to Manufacture 32 Additional Driverless Trains for Chennai Metro Phase II
Alstom, a global leader in rail transport, is poised to manufacture an additional 32 driverless trains for Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project. This development builds upon Alstom’s existing contract to supply 78 metro coaches, including 26 driverless train sets, awarded in November 2022.
The Phase II expansion of Chennai Metro encompasses three new lines: the Purple Line (Madhavaram to Siruseri SIPCOT), the Red Line (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur), and the Orange Line (Lighthouse to Poonamallee). Collectively, these lines will add approximately 118.9 kilometers to the network, incorporating 128 stations.
Alstom’s additional 32 driverless trains are expected to enhance the operational efficiency and safety of the expanded metro system. Driverless technology offers precise control over train movements, leading to reduced intervals between services and increased passenger capacity. This aligns with global trends in urban transit, where automation is leveraged to improve reliability and service frequency.
The manufacturing of these trains is anticipated to take place at Alstom’s facility near Chennai, promoting local employment and skill development. This initiative underscores the ‘Make in India’ program, aiming to boost indigenous manufacturing capabilities in high-tech sectors.
The integration of these driverless trains into Chennai Metro’s Phase II is projected to significantly enhance the city’s public transportation infrastructure. By providing a modern, efficient, and reliable transit option, the expanded metro network is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and contribute to sustainable urban development.
