Alstom Delivers 500th Electric Locomotive to Indian Railways
Alstom has successfully delivered its 500th fully made-in-India Prima T8 WAG12B electric locomotive to Indian Railways, marking a major achievement in the country’s rail infrastructure modernization efforts. The locomotive, built at Alstom’s advanced manufacturing facility in Madhepura, Bihar, signifies the strengthening of India’s push for indigenous production under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Boosting Capacity with High-Power Locomotives
The WAG12B electric locomotives are designed to revolutionize freight transportation by significantly enhancing hauling capacity and speed. Each locomotive can pull up to 6,000 tonnes of cargo at a maximum speed of 120 km/h, making it one of the most powerful freight locomotives currently in service on Indian tracks.
In addition to sheer power, the WAG12B is equipped with modern technologies such as IGBT-based propulsion systems and regenerative braking. These features not only improve energy efficiency but also contribute to more sustainable and cost-effective operations.
Supporting Self-Reliance and Economic Growth
The delivery is part of a larger contract to supply 800 such locomotives as part of a joint venture between Indian Railways and Alstom. The project supports local employment and skill development while boosting India’s manufacturing sector. It also plays a crucial role in enabling Indian Railways to achieve its long-term objectives of increasing freight traffic share, reducing logistics costs, and cutting down carbon emissions.
The 500th delivery underscores Alstom’s commitment to supporting India’s infrastructure transformation and positions the country as a growing hub for advanced rail technology. This milestone reflects how public-private collaboration can effectively drive innovation, self-reliance, and large-scale industrial progress in critical sectors like transportation.
