Akash Ambani Pushes for Local Data Storage and AI Growth
Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani has emphasized the importance of storing Indian user data within the country, stressing that local data retention is crucial for national security and growth.
Speaking at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) and ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (ITUWTSA) 2024, Ambani called for incentives, including lower electricity costs, for companies setting up AI and machine learning data centers in India.

During the event, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ambani highlighted artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative force for India’s future. He described AI as critical for realizing India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Ambani stressed the need for a comprehensive AI strategy, with a focus on “atma nirbhar” (self-reliant) efforts, to harness AI’s full potential in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Reliance Jio, India’s largest telecom company, is laying the foundation for a national AI infrastructure. Ambani stated that Jio is committed to democratizing AI, making powerful AI models and services accessible to all Indians at affordable prices. He believes AI will revolutionize every aspect of life, bringing unprecedented efficiency and abundance across various sectors.

Ambani underscored AI’s potential to reshape industries. In manufacturing, AI could make India a global hub for both products and services, while in agriculture, it could help farmers increase yields with fewer resources.
