AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam Arrested for Remarks on Pahalgam Attack

In a decisive move, the Assam Police have arrested Aminul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), for making statements deemed derogatory and for defending Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The arrest comes in the wake of a brutal terrorist assault on April 22 in Pahalgam, where 26 individuals, predominantly tourists, lost their lives. Islam’s comments, made during a public gathering, were recorded and widely circulated on social media platforms, raising concerns over their potential to incite unrest.

Aminul Islam Arrest

The Assam Police, in a statement on social media platform X, confirmed the arrest, stating that Islam was booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353. The statement emphasized that the MLA’s remarks were misleading and had the potential to create an adverse situation.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the issue in a press conference, revealing that a video had surfaced showing Islam defending Pakistan and its alleged involvement in the Pahalgam attack. “I had instructed the police to take action, and accordingly, the DGP has informed me that he has been arrested. The MLA will be produced before a court and we will take the case to its logical conclusion,” Sarma stated.

Assam MLA Derogatory Remarks

Further expressing his stance on the matter, CM Sarma took to X, asserting that Assam would take the strongest possible action against anyone who dares to defend—directly or indirectly—the horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam. He emphasized that those attempting to justify or dilute the brutal murder of innocent civilians are not exercising freedom of expression but are standing against the soul of India.

In a gesture of solidarity, the Assam government announced an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of all 26 individuals who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack. “As a mark of solidarity towards the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, the government of Assam will extend an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased. Massacres and violence were once a part of Assam’s history and our people stand shoulder to shoulder with the families,” Sarma added.

Pahalgam Terror Response

The arrest of MLA Aminul Islam underscores the Assam government’s commitment to maintaining communal harmony and taking a firm stand against any form of support or justification for terrorism. The swift action serves as a warning to public figures about the repercussions of making statements that could potentially disrupt societal peace and unity.

As the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives in Pahalgam, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and preventing any narratives that could undermine the country’s integrity and security.
