Air Canada Suspends JFK Flights For 5 Months

Air Canada will suspend its flights to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport for nearly five months, in a move linked to rising jet fuel costs. The temporary suspension will affect services from Toronto and Montreal starting June 1, with the airline planning to restore the route on October 25. The decision reflects the growing pressure higher fuel prices are placing on airline operations.

Air Canada Suspends New York JFK Flights

The airline’s temporary route cut will affect its JFK services from Toronto Pearson and Montreal-Trudeau airports. While flights to JFK are being paused, Air Canada will continue serving the New York region through LaGuardia and Newark. This means passengers travelling to or from New York will still have alternative airport options during the suspension period.

Jet Fuel Costs Force Airline Route Changes

The main reason behind the suspension is the sharp rise in jet fuel prices in recent weeks. Higher fuel costs have made some routes less viable, particularly competitive short-haul routes where profit margins are tighter. Air Canada’s move shows how fuel volatility can quickly influence airline scheduling, network planning and route profitability, especially during peak travel periods.

New York Area Service To Continue Through Other Airports

Although JFK service will be paused, Air Canada is not pulling back from the broader New York market. The airline will continue operating multiple daily flights to LaGuardia and Newark from several Canadian cities. This approach allows the carrier to maintain connectivity while reducing exposure to routes that have become more expensive to operate. Affected passengers are expected to be offered alternate travel arrangements through the other New York-area airports.
