AIIMS Removes Cardiac Surgery Head After Harassment Claim

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has removed Dr. A.K. Bisoi from his role as Head of the Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department. The decision follows a sexual harassment complaint filed by a female nurse.
The Institute has appointed Dr. V. Devagourou as interim Head “till further orders.” The order cites complaints received on September 30, and subsequent representations by the AIIMS Nurses’ Union on October 4 and 7.

Allegations and Escalation

The Nurses’ Union alleges that Dr. Bisoi used “sexually abusive, vulgar, and derogatory” language, and intimidated the complainant. They also accused him of threatening to transfer her from her clinical posting in retaliation. The complaints were escalated to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on October 9, after perceived inaction by AIIMS administration.

Inquiry and Next Steps

While Dr. Bisoi is no longer in administrative charge, he remains part of AIIMS pending investigation. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) will likely handle further proceedings. AIIMS sources say this is one of the rare times a department head has been removed over such claims.
