AIADMK Reacts as OPS Joins DMK
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam’s decision to join the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has triggered sharp political reactions, with the AIADMK stating that his exit has “freed” the party from a prolonged period of internal turmoil. The development marks a significant shift in the State’s political landscape ahead of the Assembly elections.
O Panneerselvam Joins DMK
O. Panneerselvam, a three-time Chief Minister and long-time AIADMK leader, formally joined the DMK in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister and DMK president M. K. Stalin. His move comes after a prolonged power struggle within the AIADMK, which eventually led to his expulsion from the party. Once considered a loyalist of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, Panneerselvam had increasingly found himself at odds with the party’s current leadership.
His induction into the DMK is seen as a notable political realignment, given his decades-long association with the AIADMK and his prominence in Tamil Nadu politics.
AIADMK’s Reaction To OPS Switch
Reacting to the development, AIADMK leaders said the party had been relieved of what they metaphorically described as “Saturn’s affliction,” suggesting that internal instability linked to Panneerselvam’s faction had now come to an end. The remark reflects the bitter split that had divided the AIADMK following the leadership tussle after Jayalalithaa’s demise.
Party leaders asserted that the AIADMK would now move forward with greater unity and organisational clarity.
Political Impact Ahead Of Elections
Political observers note that Panneerselvam’s shift could influence certain regions where he retains a support base. While the DMK strengthens its ranks with an experienced leader, the AIADMK will aim to consolidate its cadre ahead of the polls.
The move adds a fresh dimension to Tamil Nadu’s competitive political environment as parties prepare for the upcoming electoral battle.
