AIADMK and BJP Announce Alliance for 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have officially announced the revival of their alliance. The declaration was made in Chennai, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirming that AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) will lead the alliance in the state.
The alliance marks a notable reconciliation between the two parties, who had parted ways in 2023. Their renewed partnership is being seen as a calculated attempt to consolidate opposition forces against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which currently dominates the state’s political landscape.
As part of their collaboration, the AIADMK and BJP have agreed to work under a common minimum programme that will serve as the foundation for their joint campaign. The move is intended to project a cohesive front and offer voters an alternative vision for governance in Tamil Nadu.
The announcement also comes amidst speculation over the leadership within the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit. Addressing such concerns, Amit Shah reaffirmed that K. Annamalai will continue as the state president of the BJP, thus dispelling any notions of internal discord.
The formalization of this alliance is expected to significantly reshape political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, where regional parties have traditionally dominated. By combining AIADMK’s deep-rooted regional presence with the BJP’s national strength, the coalition aims to mount a formidable challenge to the incumbent DMK government.
With campaigns likely to intensify in the coming months, this alliance sets the stage for a high-stakes electoral battle that could influence the direction of Tamil Nadu’s politics for years to come.
