Ahmedabad Recommended As 2030 Games Host

The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has recommended Ahmedabad, India as the proposed host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, to be confirmed at the General Assembly on November 26 in Glasgow.

India’s past and Olympic bid link

India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. The 2030 centenary edition is being viewed as groundwork for India’s ambitions to host the 2036 Olympics.

Selection process and competition

Ahmedabad and Abuja, Nigeria were the candidate cities. The board evaluated bids on criteria such as infrastructure, governance, athlete experience, and technical delivery. Though Abuja’s bid was praised, Ahmedabad was preferred.

Official responses

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed India would host the Games and called it a “proud moment” for the country and the state of Gujarat. The Indian Olympic Association also highlighted the bid’s alignment with India’s long-term sporting goals.

Next steps

The recommendation must be ratified by the full Commonwealth membership during the November assembly. If approved, Ahmedabad will proceed with plans to upgrade venues and facilities in the lead-up to 2030.
