Afghanistan Sees India as “Close Friend”, Says Muttaqi
Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, calling India a “close friend” and underlining Kabul’s interest in expanding cooperation. The meeting marked one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between India and the Taliban since 2021.
Trade, Aid and Mutual Respect
Muttaqi praised India’s quick humanitarian aid following Afghanistan’s recent earthquake, noting that New Delhi was among the first to respond. He said future ties should focus on trade, people-to-people links, and mutual respect. He also assured that Afghan soil would not be used for activities threatening other nations.
India’s Diplomatic Approach
Jaishankar confirmed India’s plan to upgrade its current technical mission in Kabul into a full embassy, signalling a stronger engagement. India highlighted its focus on regional security, connectivity, and development cooperation in Afghanistan.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite positive remarks, India has not formally recognized the Taliban regime. Concerns remain over human rights, particularly women’s rights and inclusivity in governance. Analysts say India will need to carefully balance humanitarian outreach with its broader strategic considerations.
