Afghanistan Quake Toll Tops 2,200; Aftershocks Follow

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on August 31, with its epicenter in Kunar Province near the Pakistan border. The tremor devastated villages and caused widespread destruction, making it one of the deadliest quakes in decades.

Death Toll and Damage

Authorities report more than 2,200 deaths and thousands injured. Nearly entire villages were flattened, with up to 98% of buildings in the worst-hit areas destroyed. Survivors are struggling without shelter, food, or medical supplies.

Series of Aftershocks

Rescue operations have been complicated by continuous tremors. A 5.5-magnitude aftershock on September 2 and a stronger 6.2-magnitude quake on September 4 added to the devastation, triggering further collapses and landslides.

Humanitarian Crisis

Relief agencies estimate that around 84,000 people have been directly affected. The remote, mountainous terrain and ongoing instability have slowed aid delivery. International organizations are calling for urgent support to address shortages of food, medical aid, and shelter.
