Afghanistan Floods Kill at Least 17 After Heavy Rains

Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall and snowfall has claimed at least 17 lives across several regions of Afghanistan, according to local authorities. The flash floods struck parts of western, central, northern and southern provinces, sweeping through villages and low lying areas with little warning. Officials said several others were injured as homes and infrastructure were damaged by rapidly rising water levels.

Families among the victims

Authorities confirmed that entire families were among those killed in the floods. In some areas, houses collapsed after floodwaters undermined foundations, trapping residents inside. Children were also reported among the victims. Along with the loss of life, the floods destroyed dozens of homes, damaged roads and irrigation systems, and killed livestock, worsening conditions for rural communities already facing hardship.

Rescue and relief efforts underway

Disaster management teams have been deployed to assess the damage and provide emergency assistance to affected families. Temporary shelters, food supplies and medical aid are being arranged, though access to remote areas remains difficult due to damaged roads. Officials said assessments are ongoing to determine the full scale of losses and the number of people displaced by the floods.

Rising humanitarian concerns

The floods have added to Afghanistan’s growing humanitarian challenges, as millions of people already face food shortages, poverty and limited access to basic services. Aid agencies have warned that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and are placing additional strain on vulnerable communities. Authorities have urged residents in flood prone areas to remain cautious as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
