Afghan FM Invites Indian Investment

Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has extended an invitation to Indian investors to participate in Afghanistan’s economic sectors, particularly minerals, agriculture, and sports infrastructure. He made this appeal during his official visit to New Delhi, where he engaged with Indian officials and business representatives to highlight Afghanistan’s potential as an investment destination.

Trade Facilitation and Border Links

Muttaqi urged India to consider opening the Wagah border crossing for Afghan goods, calling it the “fastest and most effective trade route” for bilateral commerce. He also pointed to the Chabahar port project as an important gateway for expanding trade and transit connectivity, noting its significance for regional integration and India’s access to Central Asia. Discussions included easing trade restrictions, enhancing cross-border transport facilities, and fostering smoother banking and financial mechanisms to support private sector cooperation.

Diplomacy and Relations

The visit comes at a time when India is gradually strengthening its diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan. Reports suggest that New Delhi is preparing to upgrade its Kabul mission from a limited presence to a full-fledged embassy. While India, like most countries, has not formally recognized the Taliban government, it continues to provide humanitarian assistance and explore economic cooperation to maintain influence in the region.
