Adani to Build India’s Largest Battery Storage System

The Adani Group has announced plans to install a massive battery energy storage system (BESS) at its renewable energy complex in Khavda, Gujarat. The project aims to host a capacity of 1,126 megawatts (MW) along with 3,530 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage, making it India’s largest single-location installation of its kind. The group expects the system to be commissioned by March 2026.

Project Overview

The proposed installation will include over 700 containerised battery modules using advanced lithium-ion technology. The storage facility is designed to deliver 1,126 MW of power for approximately three hours. The Adani Group has also outlined a roadmap to scale storage capacity to 15 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by March 2027 and target a cumulative 50 GWh within five years.

Strategic Importance

This project is intended to support grid stability and anchor the large-scale renewable power being developed at Khavda, which is positioned as one of the world’s largest combined renewable and storage parks. It addresses the challenge of integrating intermittent solar and wind generation by enabling energy shifting, peak-demand management, and continuous renewable supply.
