7-yr-old in Jharkhand tests HIV-positive amid blood-bank probe

In Chaibasa, in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, the family of a seven-year-old child suffering from thalassaemia has accused a local blood bank of supplying potentially contaminated blood after the child tested positive for HIV. The child, who receives regular transfusions, has reportedly been given around 25 units of blood over time.

Authorities Launch Investigation

Health officials have confirmed that a government team has been formed to investigate the incident, including inspection of the blood-bank facility and review of donor screening and transfusion protocols. Authorities say it is still “premature” to conclude that the HIV infection resulted solely from the blood transfusions; other possibilities, such as exposure via medical instruments or needles, are being examined.

Safety Standards Under Scrutiny

The probe aims to identify whether screening lapses occurred at the blood bank, whether donor records were complete, and whether transfused units were safe. The incident has raised serious concerns about blood-safety standards, especially for patients with thalassaemia who receive frequent transfusions.

Officials Stress Strict Protocols

Health officials have emphasised that strict adherence to transfusion-safety protocols is essential and that the findings of the investigation will determine whether disciplinary or legal action is required.
