7.4-Mag Earthquake Hits Kamchatka; Tsunami Warning Lifted

A powerful earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on 13 September 2025. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the tremor at magnitude 7.4 with a depth of about 39.5 km. The epicentre was located roughly 111 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Conflicting Initial Reports

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially reported the quake at a magnitude of 7.1 and a shallower depth of 10 km, reflecting the common variation in early earthquake assessments.

Tsunami Alert Cancelled

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a tsunami warning shortly after the quake but cancelled it following further analysis. Authorities confirmed there was no continuing threat. Japan’s meteorological agency also said no tsunami risk existed for its coasts.

No Major Damage Reported

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or significant structural damage in Kamchatka. Local officials are continuing to monitor the situation, but the region appeared to have escaped serious impact.
