5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck parts of Assam in the early hours of Monday, triggering panic among residents in several districts. The tremor occurred at around 4.17 am, with the epicentre located in Morigaon district. The quake originated at a depth of roughly 50 kilometres, placing it in the category of moderate seismic activity.

Tremors Felt in Multiple Districts

The shaking was felt across central Assam, including Morigaon and nearby areas. Many residents reported being woken up by the tremor and stepping out of their homes as a precaution. However, the shaking was brief and did not lead to widespread disruption.

No Casualties or Major Damage

Authorities confirmed that there were no reports of casualties or major damage to property following the earthquake. District administrations and disaster management teams remained on alert, but preliminary assessments indicated that buildings and infrastructure remained largely unaffected.

Assam in High Seismic Zone

Assam and the wider Northeast region lie in a high seismic zone and experience earthquakes periodically due to tectonic activity. Officials reminded citizens to follow basic safety measures during tremors and remain cautious in case of aftershocks, although none of significance were reported immediately after the quake.

The situation continues to be monitored by authorities, with no emergency response required at this stage.
